On Saturday 15th March 2014, The Royal Flying Doctors Service presented a world class 1920s themed concert for the world premiere of the new Australian musical: King of The Air- The Charles Kingsford Smith Musical.
The life story of Australian aviation pioneer Sir Charles Kingsford Smith was turned into a thrilling musical by composer Gavin Lockley and award-winning biographer, Ann Blainey.
Charles Kingsford Smith remains one of Australia’s greatest heroes and most iconic personalities. His heroic aviation feats, particularly the first crossing of the Pacific Ocean in 1928, combined with his tragic early death, turned this most romantic Australian hero into a legend. The musical celebrates his epic achievements, his global fame and mourns the loss of a brilliant Australian pioneer who paid the ultimate price for his daring lifestyle. Hosted and narrated by internationally acclaimed Opera director Stuart Maunder, the concert features vocal performances by Daniel Belle (Les Miserables, The Ten Tenors, Austalian Idol), Meredith O’Reilly, David Hooley and Renae Martin. Maunder also gives a rare display of his impressive vocal prowess as part of the concert.
